Finding Joy Again: Creating Beauty in Life’s Heavier Seasons

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to create a home when you’re not feeling like yourself.

I’m writing this from a personal place because I’ve experienced quite recently – seasons where decorating, something I naturally love, felt completely out of reach.

Not because I didn’t care, but because I didn’t have the energy for it.

Sometimes it’s grief.
Sometimes it’s burnout.
Sometimes it’s anxiety, overwhelm, or just a season of life that feels uncertain and heavy.

And in those moments, even the simplest things like styling a space, lighting a candle, refreshing a corner can feel  too much.

Your home can start to feel different. Quieter and less like you.

But I’ve also noticed something else. At some point, in the middle of those heavier seasons, there’s often a small shift. This quiet decision you make in your mind and heart. Not a big, dramatic change. Just something subtle.

A wanting to open a window, to clear off a surface, to bring in flowers, to make one small area feel a little lighter.

And I’ve had to remind myself of this: That pull matters.

Because you are allowed to feel joy again and you are allowed to create beauty again, without guilt. For me, this has meant letting go of what decorating “should” look like.

It’s not about doing a full reset or creating a perfectly styled space. It’s about small, quiet choices.

Moving things around using what I already have. Keeping things simple. Letting a space feel softer, calmer, more manageable.

Sometimes it’s just one corner and sometimes, that’s enough. Giving ourselves grace in these moments is so important.

I think we often underestimate what our homes can do for us in these seasons. Not in a dramatic way but in a steady, supportive one. When everything feels heavy or overwhelming, your space can either add to that… or gently ease it.

And I’ve learned that it doesn’t take much.

Just small shifts.
Small moments of intention.
Small pieces of beauty.

And if you’re in a season where you don’t feel like doing any of that—this isn’t pressure. It’s permission. Permission to rest. Permission to leave things as they are. And when you’re ready permission to begin again, slowly.

And maybe that’s what home is meant to be in seasons like this ,not perfectly styled, not overly filled but quietly supportive. A place where you can begin again, in the smallest ways.

Because for me, it’s never really been only about the thrill of decorating for a season, it’s about creating a home that meets you where you are. I think the most meaningful spaces are the ones we build slowly, quietly while we’re healing.
